antisleep

Piglet has never been a fantastic sleeper.  She was the QUEEN of the 30 minute catnap when she was itty bitty.  That’s enough to drive you completely insane, especially when it took 45 minutes to get her to sleep.  And she didn’t sleep through the night until she was over a year old.   And it was marvelous for a few weeks until she started waking up at 4:30 am.  on the dot.  every.  morning.   She would not go back to sleep no matter what tricks I tried.   So we would get up and have some quality time until about 6:30-7:00ish when she would eventually fall asleep on my lap and we would both take a nap on the couch.  We tried keeping her up later.  But somehow, the later we kept her up, the earlier she woke up.  This was not so much fun.  And she was no where near the recommended hours of sleep for her age, because she definitely didn’t make it up in her 30 minute catnaps.  After several months of this and no end in sight, we finally just left her in her crib to cry in 30 minute increments until she finally slept until 6:00.  and she did.  most of the time.  I loved the 11 blissful hours of baby sleep.  There were even some mornings she slept until 6:30/6:45 and it was purely miraculous and beautiful.

She even started taking longer naps.  She naps a solid two hours everyday at school.  She’s usually not as proficient at home, but I’ll take an hour/hour and a half over 30 minutes ANY DAY.

However, there are still many mornings when she decides that 5:00 is THE time to get up and start the day.  We try to explain to her that she should enjoy this sleep freedom now.  There will be a day when she HAS to get up early for school or work.  But not now, now you are free to sleep as late as you want.  (or as late as your parents want).

So Grammy got Piglet these pjs for her birthday that say “I’m not sleepy”.

They are quite appropriate (even if they are boy’s pjs).

This morning, Piglet actually slept until 6:00.  (well, she woke up at 5:30 and whined a little, but went back to sleep for 30 minutes) But later, she brought a pillow into the living room and laid down on the floor and started rubbing her eyes.   She’s on a “pretend nap” kick and thinks it’s a fun game for all of use to lie on the floor and pretend to sleep.  She even brings each of us a pillow and a blanket (and sometimes even a lovey)  and says “mommy sleeping, daddy sleeping”.  Then she gets her pillow and blanket and lays down with us and says “piglet sleeping” for 2 seconds.   Then she gets up and gives us kisses to wake us up.  I wish the pretend nap would last just a little longer sometimes.

ANYWAY…this morning, she was pretend napping by herself.  And I said, “You know, you could sleep later in the morning and you wouldn’t be so tired.”

She laughed.

I said, “Really, you could sleep until 7:00”

She said, “no way”
